I'll See You in Paris

I picked up I'll See You in Paris at the 2019 West Virginia Book Festival used book sale and I decided to go ahead and dive into it as my first read of 2020. Incorporating a little bit of every genre, I'll See You in Paris offers readers a little bit of romance, a pinch of mystery, and a smidgen of historical fiction. At once a great love story and literary mystery, I’ll See You in Paris will entertain and delight, with an unexpected ending that will leave readers satisfied and eager for Gable’s next novel. I’ll See You in Paris is based on the real life of Gladys Spencer-Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough, a woman whose life was so rich and storied it could fill several books. Nearly a century after Gladys’s heyday, a young woman’s quest to understand the legendary Duchess takes her from a charming hamlet in the English countryside, to a dilapidated manse kept behind barbed wire, and ultimately to Paris, where answers will be found at last. In the end, she not only solves the riddle of the Duchess, but uncovers the missing pieces in her own life.

I'll See You in Paris was a refreshingly cute and fascinating tale pulling from the historical figure that was the Duchess of Marlborough. Though it was a lengthy book it turned into a quick read. My mind wandered a few times throughout reading the book when I felt like I had the whole story figured out, yet Gable threw in some twists that kept me engaged. Gable makes you think you have the answers with little pieces of information and then suddenly throws a curve ball. As I mentioned earlier, this story incorporates different genres, which was a nice break from strictly mystery or historical fiction. Gable's writing style compares to Kristin Hannah and Kate Quinn, so fans of these aforementioned authors may get a kick out of I'll See You in Paris. The characters had well developed personalities and were easy to imagine. Often times I found myself wanting to be able to meet the characters in person. This was not a disappointing purchase, and I look forward to reading some of Gable's other works.
