Delia Owens creates a fascinating and alluring story of love and mystery, set in the southern marshes of North Carolina in Where the Crawdads Sing. For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals begin to suspect Kya Clark, the so-called "Marsh Girl". Though the public perceive Kya as uneducated and barbarous, Kya is sensitive and intelligent after surviving years alone in the marsh that she calls home. After years of loneliness and solitude, the time comes when she yearns to be loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty and mystique, Kya opens herself to new possibilities.
As a child, Kya is abandoned by almost everyone she knows and loves, leaving her to fend for herself in the relentless, yet magnificent, marsh. In her rare interactions with the outside world, Kya is shunned and considered "trash" to those around her. As she learns to make her own way in the marsh, relying on the land and animals that inhabit it, the only sincere human contact she has is with a black store owner, Jumpin', and his wife, Mabel, and a young boy who frequents the marsh, Tate. After developing a friendship and love for Tate, Kya must face the harsh reality that he is still a part of the outside world and must leave her to pursue his own dreams. Finding herself abandoned, yet again, she finds solace in a relationship she develops with a boy from town, Chase. Years after their tumultuous relationship ends, Chase is found dead in the nearby marsh. As the town points the blame to Kya, she finds herself in the battle for her life. After living a life of solitude and isolation, Kya must rely on those who once shunned her to prove her innocence.
Where the Craswdads Sing explores the boundaries of independence and the impact of societal judgments and opinions through a truly entrancing tale. Kya is a free-spirit, determined to maintain her independent way of life developed by the many losses she faced as a child and teen. Her resilience and self-contemplation, along with her desire for intellect makes her one of the strongest literary characters of the year. Though Kya spends most of her years alone in the marsh, her story shows the importance of connection. Despite the loss and judgement she experiences throughout her life, Kya remains resilient. Delia Owens developed a unique and awe inspiring character through Kya, which allowed for a truly mesmerizing story to captivate readers of all kinds. Kya's story easily transitions from romance to suspense, with every other genre in between. This novel embraces the female spirit through Kya's capability to persevere through the toughest of physical, emotional, and mental circumstances.
